Frequently Asked Questions About Discord Timestamps

Frequently Asked Questions About Discord Snowflake IDs

What is a Discord Snowflake ID?
A Discord Snowflake ID is a unique 64-bit integer assigned to every entity in Discord, including users, bots, servers (guilds), channels, roles, and messages. Because the first 42 bits represent the millisecond timestamp when the object was created, any Discord ID can be reverse-engineered to determine its exact creation date and time.
Can a Discord Snowflake ID be faked or altered?
No. Discord Snowflake IDs are generated server-side by Discord's distributed backend clusters at the exact millisecond an account, message, or channel is created. Users cannot choose, spoof, or modify their Snowflake ID.
How do I find someone's Discord User ID or a Message ID?
1. Open Discord Settings -> Advanced -> toggle on Developer Mode. 2. To copy a user ID, right-click their avatar or profile and click Copy User ID. 3. To copy a message ID, right-click the message and click Copy Message ID. 4. On iOS and Android, long-press the message or tap the user's profile and tap the three dots to copy the ID.
Why are Discord IDs 17 to 19 digits long?
Discord IDs are 64-bit unsigned integers represented in decimal notation. Accounts created in 2015–2016 started around 17 digits. As time advances and the millisecond counter increases, IDs grew to 18 digits (around 2018–2022) and currently 19 digits.
Can I find someone's IP address or location from a Discord Snowflake ID?
No. A Discord Snowflake ID contains absolutely zero personal data, IP addresses, email addresses, or geographic locations. It only contains the creation timestamp, internal worker ID, internal process ID, and an auto-incrementing sequence number.
What is the Discord Epoch and why is it Jan 1, 2015?
Standard Unix epoch starts on January 1, 1970. Discord was founded in 2015 and chose January 1, 2015 00:00:00 UTC (1420070400000 ms) as its custom epoch offset. This custom starting point allows 42 bits to store timestamps for over 139 years without integer overflow.
